North-Birch material library and design studio

About

Twenty-one years inside one industry

North-Birch is an Australian interior design and procurement house working exclusively with casinos, integrated resorts and premium gaming venues. We are not a generalist studio that also does gaming.

Casino interior concept

Our history

Built from specification work, not from styling

The practice began in 2005 writing finish specifications for regional gaming clubs that could not afford a full design team. That origin still shapes us: we think in documentation, tolerances and certificates first, and we believe atmosphere is the outcome of good technical decisions rather than a substitute for them.

Today we hold design, procurement, logistics and installation supervision inside a single team of forty-one people across Sydney and Singapore, delivering programmes from single-salon refurbishments to full integrated-resort public areas.

Mission

To make the interior of a gaming venue a commercial asset — designed for the way it trades, built to survive it, and documented so it can be maintained for a decade.

Vision

To be the reference partner for casino interiors across the Asia-Pacific, judged by how our completed venues perform five years after opening rather than on opening night.

Design philosophy

Restraint, material honesty and a small number of decisive gestures. Luxury in a gaming room comes from proportion, light and touch, not from accumulation.

01

Specialisation

We work only in gaming and hospitality environments. Depth in one sector produces better decisions than breadth across many.

02

Transparency

Disclosed margins, written variations and no undisclosed manufacturer commissions. Operators see the same numbers we do.

03

Craft

We prototype, inspect and reject. A delivered item either meets the written acceptance standard or it does not ship.

04

Longevity

We design for the second refurbishment cycle, holding drawings, dye lots and attic stock so a venue can repair rather than replace.

05

Discretion

Most of our work sits under confidentiality. Client names and images are only ever released with written permission.

06

Responsibility

Audited factories, certified timber, low-VOC finishes and take-back arrangements for replaced floor coverings.

Milestones

How the practice developed

  1. 2005

Founded in Sydney as a two-person specification consultancy servicing regional gaming clubs.

  2. 2009

First full casino floor refurbishment delivered; the procurement division is established to control quality end to end.

  3. 2014

Singapore sourcing office opened to manage Asian manufacturing and consolidate freight for Australian projects.

  4. 2018

Material library relocated to a purpose-built Sydney studio with a permanent mock-up room.

  5. 2021

In-house lighting engineering added, enabling luminance modelling and on-site commissioning under one contract.

  6. 2026

168 completed programmes across 34 countries, with 240 audited supplier and workshop partners.

Network

International partnerships and supplier network

We work with 240 audited manufacturers across Australia, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Turkey, Japan, Vietnam and Malaysia. Each is qualified against commercial durability, certification capability, capacity and labour standards before it receives a first order.

  • Physical factory audit before onboarding and every twenty-four months after
  • ISO 9001 quality systems preferred; ISO 14001 environmental systems prioritised
  • FSC or PEFC chain-of-custody evidence on all timber and veneer
  • Documented labour standards under our published supplier policy

Standards

Quality, sustainability and innovation

Quality is enforced by a written acceptance standard per item — finish, tolerance, upholstery tension, colour match and certification — inspected at prototype, mid-run and pre-shipment.

Sustainability is practical rather than promotional: recycled-content yarns, low-VOC finishes, consolidated freight to reduce shipping movements, and take-back arrangements that divert replaced carpet from landfill.

Innovation is tested before it is sold. New materials enter our library and our mock-up room for at least one operating cycle before we place them in a client's venue.
